PDF magazines Archives
Toggle is great l'il art magazine in PDF form that you can print out yourself and staple together if you are so inclined. The magazine is a collaboration between Jackamotta and Thinkmule, two artists who went back and forth creating pages in response to the others work. Lovely Freehand drawing/collage mixed media work - the children of graffiti, Dave Mckean and Robert Rauschenberg.
The Beast is an online PDF art 'zine with a found object, artist's journal aesthetic. The last issue was in 2002 - but all 12 issues are still up and available for download. Another great example of a group of people who should be given money to do a print magazine - but lacking funds, upload their work as a PDF.
A friend sent me to this site PDF Mags. It calls itself "Your PDF Mag's Magazine." I have no idea what that means. However, there are a bunch of magazines that come out in PDF form listed on the site with links to download. Mr. Mcginnis and I are always on about the various reasons for going the PDF route—no money, not wanting to use up a lot of paper, wanting to add video, other interactive thingies, etc. Go to this site and look around. I'm not yet through them all but so far I'm all into this Polish photo mag called Abandoned Magazine. It's simple: black and white photographs of bits of graffiti on falling down buildings and I'm really in that kind of mood this week.
For another list of online only magazines, check out scrnmgs.com. This photo mag AK47.tv caught my eye. They seem to publish here and there, the last issue being jan/feb 06, but there's a fair amount of content to browse through. Check it out.
New York Ghost, the hilarious, anonymously-penned PDF newsletter "you print out at work," is celebrating its first birthday today. Way to go, mysterious stranger! The Ghost, which mails out once a week, may contain one or more of the following: a poem, photograph, play, letter, interview, old diary entry. I've been receiving this odd little gem for a couple months now and I love it. Somtimes I get overwhelmed by the shear number of gossip sites and snarky news blogs and lolcats in the internet universe and am pleased that someone feels compelled to regularly send a nice smart pdf to break the monotony.
Printed Matter has a show up right now of the printed works of artist Aleksandra Mir. She made a series of publications called Living and Loving which are these in-depth biographies of people on the periphery of the art world (a CCA security guard, a daughter of art collectors, etc). Each one is a long interview with the subject broken up by pages of photographs from the subject's life. These, as well as some of her other publications, are available for download and sized at a nice 11x17 on her website. In the spirit of the New York Ghost, go ahead and print them out at work.
Portuguese magazine Cru-A has a new issue out and available for download on their site. As usual, it contains some good photography and articles I cannot read.
